Lara Moritz is an Emmy Award-winning anchor for KMBC 9 News, co-anchoring the station's 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts. For decades, she has been a trusted source of news and information for Kansas City, helping viewers navigate the region's biggest stories through accurate reporting, thoughtful storytelling, and a commitment to serving the community.

Originally from Wisconsin, Lara has proudly called Kansas City home for much of her career. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, before completing her master's degree at the University of Kansas.

Throughout her career, Lara has earned some of broadcast journalism's highest honors, including four Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and four Emmy Awards for reporting. In 2012, she received the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award, recognizing women who inspire others through leadership, perseverance, and the belief that anything is possible.

Throughout her career, Lara has led investigations that have prompted accountability and sparked important conversations across Kansas City. Her two-year investigation into the Kansas Highway Patrol followed allegations of discrimination by female troopers and ultimately preceded the early retirement of the agency's colonel. She also investigated Jackson County's controversial property tax assessments, asking why several high-profile public officials—including the county assessor—received lower property assessments than neighboring homeowners.

Lara says the most meaningful part of journalism is the opportunity to connect with people and tell stories that make a difference.

"The people I meet while covering stories help me grow as a human being. Some stories are humbling, some are inspiring, and every single story is valuable."

Lara has also led three KMBC Chronicle documentaries, the station's award-winning long-form storytelling franchise. Her documentaries include an in-depth look at Kansas City independent rap icon Tech N9ne, The War Within, which examined mental health challenges, and The Helpers, which explored Kansas City's rise in juvenile crime and the people and organizations working to find solutions.

Among the many interviews throughout her career, one of her most memorable was a one-on-one conversation with President Barack Obama.

Beyond the anchor desk, Lara has been an active member of the Kansas City community for more than 25 years. She has supported organizations including the Kansas City Crime Commission and Living in Vitality, reflecting her longstanding commitment to public safety, community health, and civic engagement.

Outside the newsroom, Lara enjoys challenging herself through endurance athletics. She has completed three marathons, two half-marathons, and a triathlon, and continues to enjoy running, strength training, and walking.   Request Lara Moritz for an appearance.
