WASHINGTON —

The U.S. State Department has issued a worldwide security alert for Americans abroad, warning that Iran-backed or pro-Iran groups could target U.S. citizens.

“Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation,” the State Department said in an alert posted Saturday.

While the warning cites tensions in the Middle East, it urges Americans worldwide to remain vigilant.

“Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the department said.

The alert comes as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues to escalate.

The U.S. launched another round of airstrikes early Monday, targeting sites near a northwestern Iranian city believed to house underground missile bases after announcing the death of another American service member.

Iran responded by launching attacks on Bahrain — home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet — and Kuwait.

Some U.S. embassies have issued additional, location-specific warnings.

The U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a security alert after Jordanian authorities evacuated Aqaba’s international airport and seaport because of what officials described as a “specific and credible threat.”

The embassy urged Americans to avoid both the airport and seaport and to “keep a low profile.”

The State Department also advises travelers to review the latest Travel Advisory and security alerts for their destination at travel.state.gov before departing.
