Residents at an apartment complex north of the Missouri River are waking up without a place to live after overnight storms ripped the roof off their apartment building.
This happened around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Holiday Apartments in the 100 block of Northwest Harlem Road.
Ricky Jones has lived at Holiday apartments for over a decade. He was awake when the storm hit his building.
"Like a big sheet of water just came down and a big old gust of wind. I couldn't see my car. That's how strong the wind was," said Jones. "And all of a sudden just heard a big old crash and looked up and said wow."
"It was a loud whistle, then a rip, and then a crash," another resident added.
For the better part of the morning, debris covered the parking lot and several of the cars in it. Any open spot was coated with broken glass.
Residents also haven't had electricity since the storm.
"I got three cats and the dog, all rescues and unfortunately, you know, I can't leave them at home in a locked apartment with no air," said resident, August Jentsch.
Jentsch passed out candles to every neighbor in the building for light.
" This has really been the worst storm I've seen," Jentsch said.
Regardless of the damage, several residents expressed they were just relieved no one was injured
"You know, cars are material things, but you can't replace a person. Yeah, but I'm just glad everybody's okay," Jones said.
A statement from the fire department sent this morning stated KCMO and the Red Cross would help the 61 people impacted, but residents tell KMBC they haven't heard anything from either entity yet.
