SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. —

The Chiefs have plenty of competition at wide receiver, and two young players are making progress as training camp winds down.

Wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea spoke on rookie Cyrus Allen and second-year wide receiver Jalen Royals on Wednesday.

O'Shea pointed to different areas where each has developed during camp.

Allen has already flashed during the preseason.

He caught two passes for 20 yards against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, including a leaping catch on third down.

O’Shea said Allen's willingness to take coaching has stood out.

“Cyrus has come in and he’s taken the coaching,” O’Shea said. “He’s done a great job of working extremely hard and trying to concentrate on the things we’ve asked him to do.”

The transition to NFL receiver involves more than simply getting open and catching passes.

O’Shea said Allen is learning the smaller details that come with the position.

“There is so much detail and small things that go into being successful as a receiver in this league,” O’Shea said.

O’Shea believes more practice and game experience will help.

“I believe time on task; he’ll just continue to get better,” O’Shea said.

Royals, meanwhile, is helping himself by showing he can handle several responsibilities.

O’Shea said the Chiefs have moved Royals around the formation and asked him to learn multiple receiver positions.

“He has some versatility because he is very smart mentally,” O’Shea said. “So, we have moved him around the formation and that’s been a very positive thing for him because it’s increased the amount of times he’s out there on plays.
