‘Our future is dying off’: Witness describes gunfire after 2 young men killed in Kansas City
The search is on for the killer or killers of two young men after a Sunday afternoon shooting in the 2000 block of Wheeling Avenue in Kansas City.
A third shooting victim is in the hospital in stable condition.
Michael Poindexter was at home at about 12:45 p.m. Sunday with his 12-year-old cousin.
"All of a sudden, I heard pow, pow. And then I heard something that sounds like heavy machinery, heavy gunfire," Poindexter said.
Poindexter said he and his cousin dropped to the floor to protect themselves from stray bullets.
When it was over, and they came outside, they found the driver of a vehicle screaming for help because he was shot.
Poindexter also saw a deceased victim hanging out from the vehicle's passenger seat.
He found a second deceased victim near the wall of his apartment building.
"I was surprised to see how close it was," Poindexter said.
Poindexter called 911.
He said Kansas City Police officers arrived in about five minutes.
The shooting took place in a part of the apartment complex where Poindexter said children routinely play.
Kansas City Police investigators have identified the two murder victims as Sabrae Morris, 21, and Raul Lara-Delgado, 19.
"They're supposed to be our future. But our future is dying off. It's very sad," Poindexter said.
According to court records, murder victim Sabrae Morris has a trial set for October in a pending Kansas City Municipal Court assault case.
His sister said she had no idea who Lara-Delgado was, the other murder victim in this case.
There have been 84 homicides so far this year in Kansas City.
There were 107 at the same time last year.
According to KCPD, 25 percent of this year's murder victims are between the ages of 18 and 24, including the two new ones.
