‘The Keys to the Kingdom’ updated with Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl success

As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their final preseason game Friday night, a new edition of a book celebrating the team’s history has been released.

Kansas City sports writer and author David Smale has published the second edition of his book, "The Keys to the Kingdom," which was first released in 2020.

Smale said the Chiefs’ success since then, including three Super Bowl wins, inspired the update.

"The first version was very successful, and we feel like there's plenty of Chiefs fans that didn't get a copy that would like a copy of the whole history," Smale said.

The book begins with the team’s founding and follows their history through winning and losing seasons.

Smale said updating the book to reflect the team’s achievements through 2026 was important.

"It's been fun to follow them under Andy Reid and especially since Patrick Mahomes got here," Smale said.

He added that Reid and Mahomes have redefined how people view the Chiefs.

"The Chiefs are still relevant as long as they have Andy Reid coaching and especially as long as they have Patrick Mahomes as quarterback, they've got a chance every year," Smale said.

Smale said while fans were disappointed with last season, they are optimistic about the upcoming year and eager for a strong 2026 run.

"I think there's a lot of excitement this year. People are excited about getting people healthy, and turning things around," Smale said.

"The Keys to the Kingdom" is available at most area bookstores.
