Section of Southwest Trafficway won't reopen until next week at the earliest after 1892 sewer cave-in
A large portion of Southwest Trafficway in Kansas City will remain closed into next week after officials said a sewer from 1892 collapsed under the roadway.
Lanes of Southwest Trafficway were closed earlier this week following a partial street collapse.
Kansas City police said they were called out around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday after a sinkhole was reported in the southbound lanes near 31st Street.
KC Water said crews are addressing the collapse, which was reported between 28th and 31st streets.
Officials said in a news conference Friday that a clay sewer from 1892 collapsed under the roadway, causing the massive sinkhole. The issue is approximately 25 feet underground.
Complicating matters are a nearby waterline dating back to 1932, along with underground lines from Evergy.
As a result of that sewer collapse, crews expect to have to rip up approximately 80 feet of roadway.
They are anticipating that portion of Southwest Trafficway will remain closed through 6 a.m. Wednesday at the earliest.
Drivers who normally travel through the area should find an alternate route.
